Cape Clear Belted Galloway

The home of island hardy and docile out-wintered cattle.

We look after a small pedigree herd of Belted Galloway cattle, a traditional breed native to the Scottish hills, on our 110 acre island farm. On this windswept rugged land, we thrive to produce quality cattle true to the Belted Galloway type. We like to put particular emphasis on their hardiness and docility.

Promoting the use of rare and traditional breeds for food and conservation grazing in Ireland is a key interest of ours and we regularly have cattle for sale and welcome farm visits.

Galloway cattle are naturally polled. The most visible characteristics of the Belted Galloway are its long hair coat and the broad white belt that completely encircles the body. Its coarse outer coat helps shed the rain, and its soft undercoat provides insulation and waterproofing, enabling the breed to spend winter outside. Black Belteds are most prominent, but Dun and Red Belteds are also recognized by breed societies, the latter being comparatively rare and sought after. A female Belted Galloway cannot be registered in the Herd Book if it has white above the dewclaw other than the belt, but can be registered in the Appendix. A bull can only be registered in the Herd book if it has no other white than the belt.

Buying a Fastnet Belted Galloway means your are aquiring a docile and hardy animal from well established bloodlines which has only been fed on grass and has never set hoof into a shed. We are certified organic and adhere to organic rules for grassland management and animal care.

We sell yearling pedigree heifers in the sping and grass fed bull weanlings in the autumn. We occationally have animals for sale out of season. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
